GRAPHIC NOVEL AND COMICS WORKSHOP FOR BIPOC CREATORS

Paneling It out Together

August 8-11, 2024

Are you a BIPOC creator with an idea for a graphic novel or shorter comics? Join author/illustrators Ruth Chan and Sharee Miller for a community-driven graphic novel and comics workshop. This is a safe space to share ideas, work on your own project, learn about the GN/comics business, and build community! Hands-on exercises, one-on-one consultations, and peer reviews will help you take your project to the next level.  Come ready to be inspired.

Graphic novels and comics are an amazing way to engage young readers. The combination of words and pictures allows us to create windows and doors for children to see themselves represented and empathize with those who are different from them. We want to foster diverse/own voices stories in this space. Participants are invited to submit one work-in-progress graphic novel or comics idea ahead of the weekend if they’d like a one-on-one consultation.

This workshop accommodates 10 people and is open to members of the children’s book community who identify as BIPOC. For the sake of clarity, this workshop is not open to allies.

Prices include accommodations and all meals from Thursday afternoon to Sunday afternoon.
Single rooms are $1,800. Two bedrooms offer the possibility of double occupancy, at $1,450 per person.

Ruth Chan is an illustrator/author of comics and children’s books. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, Cup of Jo, and with publishers HarperCollins, Macmillan, Simon & Schuster, Disney-Hyperion, and Abrams. Sharee Miller is the best-selling author/illustrator of Curlfriends: New in Town. Her comics have been featured in the Washington Post, New York Times, Cup of Jo, and Illustoria. She is well known for her acclaimed picture book Don't Touch My Hair. Sharee is currently working on the graphic novel adaptation of One Crazy Summer, by Rita Willams-Garcia, and the second book in the Curlfriends series.
